Use whole vanilla beans as a direct replacement for vanilla extract or vanilla bean past. 1 whole vanilla bean equals approximately 2 teaspoons of extract.
To open a whole vanilla bean; use a VERY sharp paring knife to slice the bean lengthwise, then, using a spoon or knife scrape the seeds from inside the pod. Add the seeds to your recipe as desired.
Save the vanilla bean pod, as it can be used to flavour many things - such as sugar for your coffee.
